"There are so many smiles on people's faces, it’s what makes our day." Justine, Brittany and Catherine V.F. Dronet of Norco, CA, call themselves We Three Sisters. The three girls, ages 12, 14 and 8, respectively, share the joys of their miniature horse, Pepsi, during their visits to a local hospice and a center for mentally challenged adults.
What kind of philanthropic or volunteer work do you do?
We Three Sisters: We have helped the endangered species, the China Moon bear, by doing a booth at an Earth Day Festival, talking to 1000 L.A. Unified School District children about the Moon bear and by going to Saint Benedict Elementary School. Now we are taking our miniature horse, Pepsi, to a hospice in Corona and taking her to a center for mentally challenged adults called Ability Counts.
What is the name and location of the organization?
We Three Sisters: We call ourselves WE THREE SISTERS, and we live in Norco, California.
Tell us about the project, especially who benefited from this work.
We Three Sisters: The people who benefit from this are the people who meet Pepsi. This is not something you would see every day, so it’s fun for adults and children to be able to see a smaller version of a horse. We not only allow them to pet and play with the horse, but we also teach them about how to care for the horse and the names of the horse’s body parts.
What inspired you to get involved?
We Three Sisters: We wanted a miniature horse to play and have fun with, so we started looking and came upon Pepsi. Her previous owner's son had been hit by a car, and she had used Pepsi as a form of therapy. We decided this was a great idea, to bring it to more children and adults in need of a great friend like Pepsi.
What is/was the best thing about your experience?
We Three Sisters: The best thing about our experience is seeing the look on people's faces when they meet Pepsi.
What was the biggest surprise?
We Three Sisters: How much people love and enjoy Pepsi. There are so many smiles on people's faces, it’s what makes our day.
What new things have you learned as a result of your experience and how have you changed as a result?
We Three Sisters: We have learned about struggles that people in hospitals and hospices face every day as a result of their diseases. In learning this, we have become more open-minded about everything.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of getting involved in philanthropy or volunteering?
We Three Sisters: Be open-minded in all situations, have fun, and make someone's day!!!
