Your Stories

Read about Thomas Puciarella's experience working at the Casey Cares Foundation.

Thomas makes a difference in the lives of critically ill children and their families, when he volunteers at the Casey Cares Foundation.

What kind of philanthropy did you participate in?

Thomas: I participate in the Casey Cares Foundation a national nonprofit organization. [Casey Cares provides supportive programs to critically ill children and their families.]

Where did you get the idea to get involved?

Thomas: When my brother Nick died when I was two, I was devastated when I fully understood. I help at Casey Cares because it allows me to help those just like my brother. Maybe I can make a difference in their lives.

Where were you working?

Thomas: I used to work with Grant-A-Wish Foundation.

Did you work with anyone else?

Thomas: Not currently.

What was the best thing about your experience with philanthropy?

Thomas: The best thing I got out of volunteering was knowing at the end of the day I helped someone who I don't even know and doesn't know me to live life a little better.

What was the hardest part of your project?

Thomas: I think the hardest part of my project was being involved personally with the children. When I see their brilliant smiles when I spend time with them, and then the next week I hear they have passed away, I feel empty inside like I have lost a piece of myself in them.

What would you say to someone else who is thinking of getting involved with some kind of philanthropy?

Thomas: I would say to someone who might want to get involved "It's a great way to fulfill your community service requirement, and you'll feel great that you did something good for someone else, and maybe helped them survive their horrible ordeal."

How have you changed as a result of your experience participating in philanthropy?

Thomas: Yes, I have changed. I have been able see people much less fortunate than I succeed and live life no matter what comes their way. . . . I have learned a lot from these people and I would be so honored to call them not only my friends but also my salvation.
