Your Stories

Read about Ruth Vitsemmo Akumbu's work with underprivileged Aku-Fulani girls
in Bambili.

Ruth Vitsemmo Akumbu, 25, is founder and coordinator of "Seek Ye Multipurpose," a group that helps underprivileged Aku-Fulani girls in Bambili, which is in the Northwest province of Cameroon, Africa.
Ruth sent her "story" to us on Thursday, October 10, 2002.

What kind of philanthropy did you participate in?

Ruth: I did and I still do participate in philanthropic work. It’s based on educating underprivileged Aku-Fulani girls.

Where did you get the idea to get involved?

Ruth: I live among them and see their needs.

Where were you working?

Ruth: I work with a common initiative group that renders services in areas that are in need. We are based in Bambili in the Northwest province of Cameroon.

Did you work with anyone else?

Ruth: I work with 5 other men and women.

What was the best thing about your experience with philanthropy?

Ruth: The joy of seeing my goal accomplished.

What was the hardest part of your project?

Ruth: The financial aspect. It’s the hardest thing for a group such as ours and for me in particular who is head of the group, and I always have to see that the goals of the group are accomplished.

What would you say to someone else who is thinking of getting involved with some kind of philanthropy?

Ruth:  I would say, if you have the heart for people, do it. If not don't. It’s not always easy, but you will find joy when you render a philanthropic service.

How have you changed as a result of your experience participating in philanthropy?

Ruth: I am more determined than ever to love and serve without receiving a reward.
