By collecting money to feed homeless pets, ten-year-old Robert Kiss-Mihaly of Duluth, GA, discovered a love for animals and how a little money can go a long way.

What kind of philanthropic or volunteer work did/do you do?

Robert: I collect money for CARL (Companion Animal Rescue League). CARL fosters homeless animals. Each Saturday they have an adoption day at PETsMART. I go there and help with the animals.

Robert: Companion Animal Rescue League (CARL), in Duluth, GA.

Tell us about the project, especially who benefited from this work.

Robert: The dogs and cats benefit most from my work. $20 is enough to feed one animal for one month. Also, sometimes the animals get restless in their kennels, so I take the dogs for a short walk and pet the cats; that calms them down.

What inspired you to get involved?

Robert: Around Christmas time I noticed money was being collected for the homeless and for children. I felt sorry for homeless animals, and that is how came the idea up.

How did you first get involved? Through school? Your parents? Give us some details.

Robert: First, I just collected money from parents at my school and in my neighborhood. Then I started calling animal rescue places.

What is/was the best thing about your experience?

Robert: To see animals that have been up for adoption for a long time getting a good home, and the people are happy to take them.

What is/was the hardest part?

Robert: When I ask for money from people, and they don't give, not even a few pennies. Also, when I see animals up for adoption for a long time. I feel sad I can't take them home.

What was the biggest surprise?

Robert: How nice adults are about me helping them. I didn't know that I would like working with those animals so much.

What new things have you learned as a result of your experience and how have you changed as a result?

Robert: I learned how many animals don't have a good home, and that even a small amount of money can help.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of getting involved in philanthropy or volunteering?

Robert: You have to be serious. I am sure everyone can find something that they like to do.
