Kayla and Connor O'Brien, 11 and 8, of Franklin, MA, donated items and raised money for homeless children in their community.

What kind of philanthropic or volunteer work did/do you do?

Kayla and Connor: We had a holiday book and doll collection and collected 375 items. We also organized pajama days at our schools. Each child donated $1.00 to wear their pajamas.

What is the name and location of the organization?

Kayla and Connor: We call ourselves Cozy Warm Kids and are located in Franklin, MA.

Tell us about the project, especially who benefits from this work.

Kayla and Connor: We raise money for Horizons for Homeless Children in Massachusetts. They are committed to changing the lives of homeless children and their families.

What inspired you to get involved?

Kayla and Connor: We want every child to have a warm place to sleep each night and a chance for a good life.

How did you first get involved? Through school? Your parents? Give us some details.

Kayla and Connor: My mom read us an article about some homeless children and we knew we needed to help!

What is/was the best thing about your experience?

Kayla and Connor: Knowing that we can make a difference in someone's life.

What is/was the hardest part?

Kayla and Connor: We haven't found it hard yet!

What was the biggest surprise?

Kayla and Connor: How generous and willing to help people are!

What new things have you learned as a result of your experience and how have you changed as a result?

Kayla and Connor: We realized that two kids can really make a difference! We are more grateful for what we have and also more determined to help those who are less fortunate.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of getting involved in philanthropy or volunteering?

Kayla and Connor: DO IT!
