Katharine, age 7, was inspired to volunteer
her time to clean up a park in New Hampshire.
Katharine has learned that she and her cousin,
Sarah, can work together to help other people.
What kind of philanthropic or volunteer work
did/do you do?
Katharine: I helped clean a park in New
Hampshire.
What is the name and location of the organization?
Katharine: The Salmon Falls River Park
Tell us about the project, especially who
benefited from this work.
Katharine: We cleaned the park so all
the kids and grown-ups who live around it could
find it clean and tidy.
What inspired you to get involved?
Katharine: This Web site inspired me
and my cousin Sarah, who is 8. We worked together.
How did you first get involved? Through
school? Your parents?
Some other means? Give us some details.
Katharine: My mom and my aunt Lucy, who
made the park with some other grown ups.
What is/was the best thing about your experience?
Katharine: We never knew how clean the
park would be after we worked there, and we
felt very proud of ourselves.
What is/was the hardest part?
Katharine: Raking all the leaves and
twigs.
What was the biggest surprise?
Katharine: That we made such a big difference.
We collected 8 bags of trash and leaves in one
afternoon!
What new things have you learned as a result
of your experience and how have you changed
as a result?
Katharine: Now I know that Sarah and
I can do things together to help other people.
What advice would you give to someone who
is thinking of getting involved in philanthropy
or volunteering?
Katharine: If it's raining, you might
want to wait for a sunny day before you do this
kind of work in your neighborhood!
