Part 5: First Fundraising Strategies for Startup Organizations

Learn the steps that organizations can take to bring in their first dollars and begin to fundraise for their future, including:

  • Identify early donor prospects to present your "elevator speech" or case statement.
  • Self-assess the readiness of your organization to fundraise
  • Recognize key factors to consider when pursuing charitable contributions, earned income, and government funding
  • Review the advantages and challenges of each potential funding source.

Tom O'Brien is the program director for Neighborhood Connections, a small grants program of the Cleveland Foundation that funds grassroots organizations in the City of Cleveland, many of which are small nonprofits or organizations seeking to become nonprofits. Prior to directing Neighborhood Connections, Mr. O'Brien was a community organizer at Slavic Village Development, a community development corporation located in southeast Cleveland. He worked with neighborhood stakeholders on community building initiatives, issue campaigns, and leadership development. He also worked on the staff of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest as an area director, recruiting, training, and assisting full-time volunteers in Oregon and Washington. Mr. O'Brien is a graduate of the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University where he earned his master's degree in social work with a focus on community development and received his bachelor's degree in history from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
