Volunteer in the Arts!

Do you want to use your creative talent for a good cause but don't know where to start? Just start by asking! Ask teachers, pastors, group advisers, staff at your favorite organizations, and so on.

Also ask at volunteer organizations, like members of The Volunteer Center National Network or the Hands On Network. Not in the U.S.? Idealist.org lists volunteer organizations in other countries.

ArtCorps' Advice for Artists is about how to use your artistic talent to help people in your community express themselves. ArtCorps is a nonprofit organization that recruits artists to fulfill its mission of bridging the communication gap between grassroots organizations and their constituents by using art as an outreach tool. Here are some ideas to donate your talents and enthusiasm to a good cause:

  • Show other people, like younger children, how to make art. Where? Afterschool programs, community centers, kids' tents at festivals and fairs...
  • Create something -- mural, web site, garden, poster, and so on -- for an organization with a mission that you support.
  • Participate in local performing arts groups, like community orchestras, theater, and dance. Stage-shy? Try working backstage or in the house!
  • Volunteer at your favorite museum, theater, performance hall, or other arts center. If you volunteer to usher at plays, concerts, and other performances, you often can watch the shows for free!
